Journalism/Newspaper Department

"Were it left to me to decide

whether we should have a

government without newspapers

or newspapers without government,

I should not hesitate to prefer the latter."

Thomas Jefferson

Welcome to the Stephen Decatur High School

Journalism and Newspaper website and

the homepage of the award winning newspaper, The Hawk!

The journalism program is composed of two English electives:  Introduction to Publications and Newspaper Production.  Both classes are designed to support the English curriculum with high interest reading and vocabulary study, while preparing students for the ever-changing world of journalism.  In the pre-requisite course, Introduction to Publications, students study history, ethics, Supreme Court law, writing for various journalistic genres, and layout principles.  In the hands-on learning environment of Newspaper Production, students run all facets of publication, from writing to business, to photography to layout.  We are proud of the numerous students from the program who have gone on to major in some aspect of communications.  Stephen Decatur High School is also proud that The Hawk has been ranked gold and silver by Columbia University for three of the past four years.

We welcome you to check out our publication on-line at the Stephen Decatur school website, http://stephendecatur.tripod.com. Click on Organizations and then find The Hawk link.
